How to type a whole phrase with one keyboard shortcut in Windows

Updated: 28.10.2026

Windows lets you assign shortcuts to open apps, but not to type text. If you want Ctrl+Alt+1 to type your email address, or a mouse side button to paste a standard reply, you need a small helper app.

Assign a hotkey to a phrase

  1. Install SnippyText and open the manager from the tray icon.
  2. Create a snippet with the text you want to type.
  3. Right-click the snippet and choose Assign a hotkey…
  4. Press the combination you want, for example Ctrl+Alt+1.

The text is pasted wherever the cursor is, in any app.

Use a mouse button

A hotkey can include a mouse button, which is handy on mice with side buttons, or for one-handed work. For example, hold the left button and press 1.

One shortcut for many phrases

You will run out of easy key combinations quickly. Instead, give a hotkey to a folder. Pressing it opens a small menu of that folder's snippets right at the cursor: pick one with the mouse or arrow keys.

Or skip hotkeys altogether

  • Abbreviations: type ;mail and it turns into your email address.
  • Quick search: Ctrl+Alt+Space opens a search across all snippets.
  • Suggestions: start typing a phrase and press Tab to complete it.

If a shortcut doesn't work

Another app or Windows itself may already use that combination. Pick a different one. If the target app runs as administrator, run SnippyText as administrator too.
